Introduction to Overcoming Anxiety Education Program

Rural Outreach

   In general the "Overcoming Anxiety" Education Group includes:

1.      Understanding anxiety                                                                                                                              

2.      Setting realistic goals

3.      Analyzing successful coping strategies and learning to apply them systematically

4.      Learning a variety of relaxation techniques to help you manage bodily arousal and muscle tension

5.      Learning to change negative or worried thinking patterns

6.      Gradually learning to face situations that make you anxious or which you avoid

7.      Evaluating your progress

8.      Planning for your future

  The outline allows for six, eight, ten or twelve week program.  Depending on the group size and anxiety   concerns, I will determine which outline to follow.  The groups will be held in the community easiest to access by the majority of members on the waiting list.                                                                                                                                         


Counselling Resources for Adults with Anxiety Problems
(Winnipeg Area)

Where does a person find help for anxiety? A good place to begin is asking for a referral from your family physician. When contacting a counselling service, it is helpful to ask for a counsellor/therapist who has experience with treating anxiety problems. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is the most recognized and effective psychological treatment for anxiety disorders; ask the counsellor his/her experience with CBT.

COMMUNITY SERVICES

For each of these services, individuals may refer themselves. A referral from a physician is not necessary, although it is welcomed. There is no charge for these services.

Family Centre of Winnipeg. 401-393 Portage Avenue (Portage Place), Winnipeg. Tel: 947-1401 or on the Web Site www.familycentre.mb.ca. Provides individual and family counselling services.

Psychological Services Centre. University of Manitoba. Tel: 474-9222. A training centre for psychologists and social workers providing mental health services. Services are provided by senior students under supervision of university staff. Referrals are typically accepted most quickly in August and September and in January when students are starting new terms.

Community Mental Health Workers. Office; 189 Evanson. Tel; 940-2655, ask for the Intake worker Provides counseling to people with mental health problems and access to a variety of community resources. Tel: 940-2655, ask for the Intake Worker.

Employee Assistance Programs. Many employers have counseling and referral resources available for their employees. Inquire with Personnel or Human Resources for the EAP contact. All inquiries are confidential.

Red River Community College, the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg all have counseling services available to their students.

Aurora Family Therapy Centre. (formerly Inter-Faith Marriage and Family Institute). 786-9251. Provides individual and family therapy. Walk in sessions available every other Friday without appointment. Sliding Fee scale according to income and family size.

Elizabeth Hill Counseling Centre. 956-6560. Provides training to social work and psychology students under the supervision of qualified clinical social workers and psychologists. The Centre emphasizes Aboriginal health concerns and inner-city issues that individuals and families face. Services are free of charge.

SELF-HELP

The Anxiety Disorders Association of Manitoba Inc. (ADAM) 100-4 Fort Street, Winnipeg. Tel: 925-0600. Toll free: 1-800-805-8885. There are 8 regional offices in the province. ADAM provides education, support and group cognitive behaviour programs for panic disorder and social anxiety. There is a fee and groups begin throughout the year. Follow-up grad groups provide continued support for persons who have graduated from an ADAM program or from other facilities that offer CBT. The follow-up groups are available year round and there is no charge. Educational presentations to the general public or service providers are given free of charge.

SPECIALIZED SERVICES

For each of these services, individuals who inquire are asked to obtain a referral from their family physician. The services listed below have waiting lists. The contact person for each service may be contacted for more information about the service and the waiting list.

Anxiety Disorders Clinic, St. Boniface General Hospital. Serves adults with assessment and treatment services. There is an emphasis on individual consultation and group treatment although individual short-term treatment is also available on a limited basis depending upon the nature of the problem. Anxiety Disorders Clinic, Health Sciences Centre. Serves adults with an emphasis on individual short-term treatment and some use of hypnosis as anxiety management technique. Contact person: Dr. Ivan Bilash, Clinical Psychologist. Telephone 787-3345.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Spectrum Clinic, Health Sciences Centre. Serves adults with obsessive compulsive disorder and related problems like trichotillomania with respect to assessment and treatment. Two psychiatrists, Dr. Jitender Sareen and Dr. Mark Lander provide consultation. Group cognitive behaviour therapy focused on obsessive compulsive disorder for 12 sessions is conducted twice a year. Department of Psychology, Grace General Hospital, 300 Booth Drive, Winnipeg. Provides treatment of adults with anxiety disorders with an emphasis on behaviour therapy groups. Focus is on referrals from physicians who have admitting privileges at the Grace Hospital so many of the patients come from St. James/Assiniboia area. Dr. Laine Torgrud has a special interest in obsessive compulsive disorder. Contact person: Dr. Joseph Campbell, Head of Psychology. Telephone 837-0319.

PRIVATE PRACTITIONERS

Private practitioners in a number of different specialty areas serve people with anxiety problems. The professional association may be able to give you the names of professionals who provide services to people with anxiety problems. Most practitioners request a letter of referral from your family doctor.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy Institute of Manitoba. A not-for-profit institute focusing on this form of treatment provided by psychologists and psychology associates. Blue Cross and other private health plans often provide coverage for the fees. Services are not covered by Manitoba Health. Provides services for adults, families, and children and adolescents. The Panic Center. www.paniccenter.net This is an interactive Web site based in Ontario dedicated to helping those who suffer from panic disorder. The goal is to promote interaction between panic sufferers and healthcare professionals. The Panic Center offers the following free tools: 1) The panic program B, a 12 session cognitive behaviour therapy program. 2) The panic diary B designed to help track panic symptoms. 3) The Anxiety Test B to identify anxiety disorders, and 4) An online support group B a professionally moderated support community.

Anxieties.com. www.anxieties.com. A free Internet self-help site with web-based programs for persons suffering from anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder B OCD, fear of flying and post traumatic stress disorder B PTSD. This site has been organized by REID WILSON, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist who directs the Anxiety Disorders Treatment Program in Chapel Hill and Durham, North Carolina.

Psychiatrists. Services are paid for by Manitoba Health. Names are listed in the Yellow Pages or telephone the College of Physicians and Surgeons, 774-4344.

Psychologists. Services are not paid for by MB Health except for service provided through a hospital. Blue Cross and other private health plans often provide some coverage. The following use CBT for treating anxiety disorders and treat other problems such as relationship issues, depression, eating disorders, etc.

The Assiniboine Psychological Group. Offers a variety of services including: psychological assessments, individual counselling, treatment for anxiety disorders, couples therapy, family therapy, group therapy, eating disorders and positive parenting practices.

Counseling Services offered by social workers and other trained counsellors. Fees are not covered by MB Health and usually not by Blue Cross. Some counsellors charge on a sliding fee scale according to income.

This list is for your information only. ADAM does not endorse these practitioners. There may be other qualified professionals who have experience with CBT as treatment for anxiety, but are unknown to ADAM. We welcome additional referral suggestions.
